Age Regulations prohibiting discrimination on the grounds of age will come into effect in 2006. The regulations will prohibit direct and indirect discrimination, harassment, and victimisation, and will cover all aspects of employment and vocational training. The Government intends to establish a default retirement age of 65, but will also place a duty on employers to consider an employee’s request to work beyond a compulsory retirement age. Employers will be able to justify a retirement age earlier than 65 by showing that it is appropriate and necessary. For more information, please see the Department of Trade and Industry website at www.dti.gov.uk. |
